The Crusaders’ opponents? Chambers, which is seeking its third straight state title and opened the season with a narrow win at Cardinal Gibbons.
State’s Carter-Finley Stadium next Saturday, which is across the street from the school’s campus. Not much separated the two teams at the half, but Gibbons turned a 15-13 halftime lead into a 23-point advantage with a 21-0 run that included a 39-yard touchdown run by running back Donovan Shepard, which gave Gibbons its largest lead of the night.
Rolesville entered Friday’s game averaging 56.25 points per game in the playoffs, but it put up only 13 points against the Gibbons defense before making things interesting with an Antonio Crim touchdown run with 3:36 left in the fourth quarter and a one-yard TD reception by Noah Rogers with 22 seconds left. Gibbons needed to navigate past one of the hottest teams in the state in order to get back to the title game, however, and it managed to slow down the Rams offense just enough to do just that.
